Head Coach
Coach
Bobby Hughes will
begin his second season as head coach of the Montgomery Catholic High
School baseball team. Bobby and his wife Jill have made Montgomery their home and
are planning to live in the area for a long time, building a successful
and winning program at CHS.
Bobby started his
illustrious career in baseball at Marianna High School lettering all
four years. He led his team
to the Final Four in 1991 and to the sectional playoffs in 1992.
Pitching a no-hitter against Jacksonville Christian in the 1991
and compiling a two-year pitching record of 12-5.
Bobby was also named to the all-state team in 91 and 92.
In columniation of a distinguished career at Marianne High
School, Bobby was selected the “1992 Marianna High School Athlete of
the Year” in his senior year.
Bobby moved on to college
at Chipola Junior College, which was located in his hometown of
Marianna. While attending
the two-year college, Bobby compiled at 14-7 record and led them to the
Panhandle Conference Championship and finished in the top four in the
Florida Junior Collage State tournament in 1993.
The next year Bobby was selected to the All Conference team and
played in the Florida Junior College All Star game.
In 1994, Bobby was awarded Chipola Junior College Baseball
Leadership trophy for his sportsmanship and accomplishments during his
two years at the college.
Bobby then moved to
Montgomery and enrolled in Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) and
continued his baseball career. At
AUM Bobby compiled a pitching record of 16-7 and finished his career
with one of the best career Earned Run Average (ERA), placing him in the
top three in AUM history. Bobby help lead the AUM baseball team to back-to-back
regional appearances finishing in the final four in 1995 and 1996.
Bobby, having finished his
college career compiling a 30-14 record, decided it was time to move on
to something he had always wanted to do - coaching.
He started his coaching career, when he coached the 17-18 year
old Southeastern All Star team in 1996 and as a pitching coach at AUM
under Coach Q.V. Lowe in 1997 and 1998 while completing his degree at
AUM. He then moved on to
Faulkner University and became the fall pitching coach helping to
preparing the team for the 1999 season. In 1999, Bobby became the
pitching coach for Trinity Presbyterian School.
Then in the summer of 1999, Bobby became an assistant baseball
coach at Catholic High School and a Physical Education teacher at St.
Bede’s Elementary school. Finally,
in the summer of 2000, he was given the helm of the Montgomery Catholic
High School Knight’s baseball team.
Bobby’s love for
baseball has inspired him to go beyond the normal.
During two previous summers he has volunteered his time as a head
coach for the Central Alabama American Legion team, taking the teams to
the final four tournament in both 1999 and 2000.
In 2001 Bobby tried out
for the Montgomery Wings, All American Association, baseball team and
was picked for the inaugural team. However, half way into the
season his professional baseball career was cut short when an old arm
injury flared up.
